The world of fragrance and perfume is so big that we almost often forget that there are fragrances that are beyond commercial ones, and uses that are beyond just smelling good. Some uses have been practised for thousands of years. And today we are going to talk about spiritual fragrance, which serves purposes beyond just smelling good.
Spiritual fragrances are fragrances in the form of oils or incense made using dried herbs, essential oils, etc., that can help in connecting with spiritual realms and natural healing. The mixing and creation of these fragrances involves meditation techniques and utmost care.
Different Types of Spiritual Fragrance
Among many uses and purposes of spiritual fragrance, here are a few I have learnt about.
- Spirit Calling Fragrance
This type of incense or fragrance is often created with utmost care and helps you connect with spirits. Even though the realm of spirits is around us and close to us, we hardly ever pay attention to listening to them. With the use of spirit-calling incense, anyone who practices this practice will find it easier to listen or be aware of signs sent by Guides, Angels, and their loved ones who have passed away.
As mentioned previously, these fragrances must be created with precaution, a guidebook on this will advise you to have a clear mind and be clear of negativity before you even start creating or mixing the incense.
- Raven Incense
Ravens are known to be the keepers of secrets and messengers of the dark night. Raven incense helps in connecting with raven energy, which helps in accessing your personal freedom. Connecting with Raven is known to bring you messages from the night, in either your dreams or daydreams.
- Chakra Incense
Chakra Incense is used for awakening energy within your body, and driving away any blockages in your chakra system. There are many chakras in our body, and each of them holds significance. Like, the first chakra which begins at the spine holds the hurt and abuse we face in our lives, while the second chakra holds creativity and attraction.
Uses of Ritual Perfumes
- Rites and ceremonies
As an Indian, I have been around incense all my life. Whether it is for home environment purification, getting rid of bad odour, or religious rites, we cannot do without incense and flowers. In our culture(or cultures), we hold religious rites when someone is dead, on a death anniversary, when someone has an important examination/test ahead, or when someone is going for some important work.
In these kinds of religious rites, the person who guides the prayer will also light up incense sticks to purify the environment first, which is then followed by preparing food, then prayer and then eating.
- Prayers and meditations
Incense sticks can also be used every day either during the morning or evening prayer. Even when you are visiting temples or religiously significant places, the overwhelming scent and smoke of incense burning is a thing that will always be there.
I have always associated incense sticks with temples and prayers in the evening, which often have places in mini-temples or prayer rooms until I started lighting on my own room for the uplighting scent.
- Well-being
I am aware of different types of fragrant incense sticks found in the market today for anxiety, depression, and stress. Some even help in removing mental and physical fatigue, while some help you sleep peacefully. Some of the ingredients used for these kinds of incense are vetiver, jasmine, orange, eucalyptus, lemon grass, citronella, tulsi, etc.
What is The Spiritual Importance of Perfume?
The spiritual importance of fragrance is that with the right set of ingredients and properties, these fragrances help people meditate by making it easier for them to focus and connect with a world that is not necessarily easier when we don’t pay attention.
We all know that scent is a very significant part of many religions like Hinduism, Islam, etc., and apart from religions, some old cultures used incense or fragrance to achieve health and wealth. Fragrance has also always been associated tightly with witchcraft and rituals.
Does Spiritual Fragrance Work?
Among many purposes for spiritual fragrance, I only have experience with incense sticks, which probably are mostly synthetic-based. But I would say that yes, incense sticks have helped people meditate and recite prayers with a calm mind. The scent of incense creates an aura that is hard to miss and to not let it affect your mood.
