Interesting Tidbits from the World of Perfumes

9 Interesting Tidbits from the World of Perfumes

The world of perfumes has more to tell you than just about its prices and notes. Since I have started to learn more about perfumes, I have read and come across some interesting tidbits, and here’s something refreshing for you.

  1. Ever heard of Eau de metro?

We all know about eau de parfum and eau de toilette, but did you know about eau de metro?

Eau de metro is a mix of detergent and fragrance that the Paris metro used to mask the poor quality odour of the metro, which was applied to the floor and other surfaces around the metro after cleaning.

  1. You don’t have to kill the deer for musk

Musk is one of the most in-demand perfumes ingredients, and there are some 20 synthetic musks. But natural musk trade is illegal not because you have to kill a deer to get natural musk as extracting the musk pod doesn’t endanger the animal.

But it’s the process of trapping the deer that often kills the animal.

  1. Do you call the liquid in perfume ‘juice’?

If you are a perfume enthusiast, you already know that the liquid in perfume bottles is also called ‘juice’. Fun fact is that a lot of perfumers don’t like to call the liquid ‘juice’.

  1. What does Molecules 01 smell like?

A lot of people know Molecules 01 by Escentric Molecules because it is one of the most interesting perfume stories in perfumery.

But unlike the popular circulated story, it’s not a pheromone perfume. And while it smells different on different people, it also smells like ambery wood along with the wearer’s unique smell.

  1. Do perfumes have genders?

Unlike mass-market designer perfumes, niche perfumes don’t like to market their perfumes as men’s or women’s. A lot of perfumers agree that there are no genders in perfumes, and it only makes sense from the marketing aspect.

  1. Olfactory fatigue is real, but not the same for everyone

Olfactory fatigue is the phenomenon where you stop smelling a particular scent that you have been exposed to for a long time. It is also known as nose blindness, but did you know that it’s not the same for everyone?

Some people may experience olfactory fatigue sooner than others even while smelling the same perfume for the same amount of time.

  1. Not everyone liked scented print marketing…

One of the interesting ways of scent marketing found by perfumer Eugene Rimmel is scented print advertising – giving away scented almanacs and scented fans.

However, not everyone liked his efforts or creative ideas for marketing. It was thought to be intrusive and annoying because you cannot choose to not smell a print ad placed in theatre programs.

  1. Clive Christian went the extra mile to show that perfumes are art

Everyone in the world of perfumery knows that Clive Christian is one of the world’s top expensive perfume houses. Clive Christian believes perfumes have more to them than just smell, and can be understood on many levels. This is why they had a project called ‘The Sound of Perfume.’

In this award-winning project, students of The Royal College of Music entered a challenge to create a musical composition after smelling a perfume blindfolded – the perfume was Clive Christian No1.

  1. Have you heard of JAR parfums in the TV series ‘Hannibal’?

If you have watched ‘Hannibal’, and you are into fragrances, then you must have already searched for JAR Bolt of Lighting.

One of the interesting things about the perfumer behind these perfumes is that he doesn’t believe in mentioning notes of perfumes. He also seems like he does not have much to do with whether the market likes the perfumes or buys them – which makes sense to me. But what doesn’t make sense to me is why Hannibal writers decided to write about JAR perfumes in their script.

Takeaway

I want to end this post by hoping that you have learnt something new from these tidbits – I tried to give new insights, and although the post is a little short, I hope it was interesting.
